Oxyphenonium as an atropine substitute in ophthalmology.

چکیده

ATROPINE, perhaps the drug most used in ophthalmology, is prone to cause contact-irritation, often at a time when continued mydriasis is essential, in patients on long-term treatment. Unfortunately, most substitutes are less effective in producing mydriasis, and not infrequently contact-irritation is developed to these substitutes in rapid succession. Lachescine (E3) was developed in Great Britain during the war because of the possibility of a serious shortage of the usual mydriatics. It was found to have an effect mid-way between that of atropine and homatropine with cocaine. Since this time, Lachescine has been found very useful in clinical practice where atropine irritation has occurred. Its difference from the atropine group of mydriatics (Figure) made it almost free from producing irritation. Its usefulness in cases of atropine sensitivity has been suggested in recent ophthalmic text-books, and, in her original article on this subject, Mann (1946) reviews 42 cases of atropine irritation.

Oxyphenonium as an Atropine Substitute.

To the Editorial Committee of the BRITISH JOURNAL OF OPHTHALMOLOGY SiRs-In my recent article on the use of oxyphenonium as an atropine substitute (Roper-Hall, 1957) I stated that a previous atropine substitute, Lachesine, had been withdrawn from production. This was true at the date when the article was written in November, 1956, but I have recently learned that Lachesine is now being manufactu...

Oxyphenonium bromide as a mydriatic.

Oxyphenonium has an anticholinergic action like that of atropine and is used as an antispasmodic and autonomic ganglion-blocking agent in the treatment of peptic ulcer (Rowen, Bachrach, Halsted, and Schapiro, 1953) and in pre-anaesthetic medication to diminish salivary secretion (Mushin and Adams, 1955). Havener and Falls (1954) found that one drop of 5 per cent. oxyphenonium bromide instilled ...

Variable effects of previously untested muscarinic receptor antagonists on experimental myopia.

PURPOSE Atropine, pirenzepine, and himbacine prevent form-deprivation myopia (FDM) when administered intravitreously. The mechanisms and sites of action of these drugs against myopia are not clear. To shed further light on whether this mechanism is muscarinic, several other muscarinic antagonists were tested. METHODS Various concentrations of atropine, pirenzepine, dexetimide, scopolamine, tr...

Accurate measurement of refractive error in uncooperative patients and young children, requires cycloplegia. The aim of the present study was to determine whethere cyclopentolate by itself or in combination with 4 times instillation of atropine can be used as a substitute for 10 times instillation of atropine. From 1994 to 1996, 39 patients aged 2-12 years were included in this study. Cyclopleg...
